Judy's Homemade Ice Cream

SUCCESS STORIES

INITIAL SITUATION

With the help and support of Widener University’s Small Business Development Center, Judy’s Homemade Ice Cream has established itself as the premiere destination for exclusive ice cream creations in Ridley Park.

The story of Judy’s Homemade Ice Cream began when Judy wanted chocolate coconut ice cream, a flavor she could not locate on any menu. Recalling her childhood experiences of enjoying ice cream with her family, Judy set events in motion to make her own.

Fortunately for Judy, her family kick-started her passion for making her own ice cream when they satisfied her birthday request with an ice cream maker.
After a few years of pleasing her friends and family with her unique ice cream flavors, which Judy describes as simple and pure, they insisted that she begin to sell her ice cream for others to enjoy. Although she was hesitant to sell to the public, her daughter Kaitlyn encouraged her to sell her ice cream at a mountain bike race. At the race, her ice cream was such a major hit that she was completely sold out.

HOW THE SBDC HELPED

Even though Judy was finding success in selling her ice cream at local events, bike races and the local deli, she knew it was time to take her business to the next level and open her own store. Judy reached out to the Widener University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to help her take the steps necessary to expand her business. Within one year of reaching out, the Widener SBDC was able to help Judy find a store location and secure a bank loan, so that she could welcome Santa during his yearly visit to Ridley Park in December with a tasteful treat. Judy officially opened her doors to the community on April 9th, 2016, just in time for everyone to enjoy her delicious homemade ice cream in the coming warm weather.

SUCCESS

As a small business, Judy is a strong believer in community engagement and supporting causes. Judy provides a safe and comforting family environment for residents in her community. She has teamed up with local Girl Scouts for the girls to earn a badge in making ice cream. Judy also encourages other small businesses to follow their passion by providing an outlet for fellow community merchants to offer their food products in her store. If you think that is impressive, due to her daughter Kaitlyn living with CF, Judy is a proud supporter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CF) Judy regularly hosts ice cream drives dedicated to the fight against this dreadful disease. The early stages of Judy’s Home Ice Cream foresees a bright future ahead. In 2014, while still a vendor, Judy’s was awarded Best of Delco for best ice cream. In 2015 and 2016, she was honored by the Delco Times, Talk of the Town, and recently received the Best of Delco award once again on September 30th, 2016. Judy’s hope for the future is to continue serving the community and offering a fun and exciting experience that kids of all ages can enjoy.
